Boundaries 2020 - 2021
Using the metaphor of a hide stretching frame, this work talks about the reservations located in Montana and how Indian people were required to not only leave their territories but to also lose their identity and stretch themselves to fit a different culture. The “hide” is made from ripping up a facsimile of a map of Montana dated to 1881 and reconstituting it into the shape of each reservation located in the state. Each “hide” is then lashed to the frame using strips of the various treaties that were written to create that reservation and held in place with steal nails.
In 2021, I traveled to my reservation in Montana and photographed that specific Boundaries frame in various pales on the reservation. At some point, I plan to travel to all seven reservations in Montana and do the same.
