Counting Coup on Curtis 2021 -

I have a love-hate relationship with Edward S. Curtis' work. In his portfolios, he very rarely notes the name of the person he has photographed (especially if they present as female), preferring to title photographs of these peole in ways that default to speciminism and dehumanizes them.

In this series, I've stolen their images back and reimagined them in a more Indigenous way, researching their their tribal affiliation for backgrounds that reflect that belonging.  In this way, I hope that people will remember them through this lens rather than through Curtis.
